Port Rd, Port Willunga
Design & Construction by Desert Flower Landscaping
This project involved the creation of a native coastal garden and entrance upgrade, designed to reflect the coastal character of Port Willunga. We worked closely with our clients from concept to construction, managing the entire process from the initial brief and design through to construction and completion.
Locally sourced materials were central to the project, including Willunga slate, Carey Gully sandstone and local timbers, alongside existing materials reused on site wherever possible, to reduce waste and enhance sustainability.
The main entrance staircase was rebuilt using solid hardwood sleepers infilled with Willunga slate and complemented by a natural timber handrail. A bespoke farm-style entrance gate, crafted by Echunga Trading Co, provides a welcoming and character-rich arrival.
Compacted yankomite creates a breathable, low-maintenance surface, with Willunga slate stepping stones guiding movement to the main deck and dwarf kikuyu lawn.
Curved garden borders are defined with corten steel edging, with Carey Gully sandstone rocks placed throughout the landscape for structure and visual interest.
A nature playground was incorporated, using locally sourced tree stumps and sustainable Tasmanian Oak planks from Nirvana Timber Co. A custom timber bench beneath the existing pepper tree, offers a peaceful perch positioned to take in views across the entire garden.
A hardwood timber fence with mesh provides discreet safety for children and pets, with existing rocks reused and arranged along the fence line to retain soil. An additional sleeper staircase, infilled with compacted Yankomite, is nestled within the planting and provides access to the side of the house.
A soft, organic planting palette of coastal and endemic species was selected to thrive in the challenging conditions beneath a mature Aleppo pine. Thoughtfully placed lighting enhances the space after dark, with subtle uplighting bringing warmth, depth and atmosphere to the garden. Along with a custom irrigation system, to ensure the plants thrive in South Australia’s climate.
The result is a functional, sustainable and family-friendly garden that feels natural to its location and will continue to evolve over time.
