A Wildlife & Edible Garden

Designed to balance productivity with biodiversity, creating a landscape that supports Adelaide's local wildlife while providing fresh herbs and fruit for the kitchen. Existing trees and planting were retained wherever possible, with new species selected to provide nectar, habitat and food for visiting birdlife, particularly lorikeets.

Repurposed Materials & Natural Pathways

Existing materials were central to this sustainable landscape design. Repurposed red bricks were used to form part of the central pathway, garden edging and stepping stones, reducing the need for new materials while giving character and continuity to the garden.

Round-log steppers complement the brickwork, introducing a softer, natural element and creating an informal journey through the garden. The combination of recycled materials, natural textures and organic forms gives this Thebarton garden a relaxed, established feel.

A Water-Sensitive Garden Design

Existing bluestone was transformed into a dry creek bed, creating both a strong landscape feature and a practical response to stormwater management.

Fed by a stormwater pipe from the roof, the creek bed allows water to permeate naturally into the ground rather than simply being directed away from the garden. This rain garden design approach helps integrate stormwater into the landscape while adding texture and movement.

Native Planting & Habitat Creation

The native planting design works with the existing landscape, retaining established fig, citrus, finger lime and wattle trees, while introducing new species selected for their ecological value.

Nectar-rich natives including Grevillea 'Fireworks' and 'Pink Profusion', Callistemon viminalis, Eremophila maculata and Dianella revoluta 'Emerald Fountain' provide habitat and food for South Australian wildlife, with a particular focus on attracting lorikeets and other birdlife.

The Dianella's striking blue and purple star-shaped flowers rely heavily on buzz pollination, making them a magnet for native Australian blue-banded bees, adding a layer of insect biodiversity alongside the bird life the garden is designed to support. Productive, edible planting is woven throughout the garden, creating a balance between biodiversity and usefulness in the kitchen.

Rather than replacing existing materials and established plants, the design reuses, retains and adapts them to create a cohesive new garden.
